As a member of the Victoria and Albert Museum, last Friday I was lucky enough to be invited to a preview of the major Quilts exhibition before it was open to the public. The exhibition features sixty-five British quilts, with examples dating from 1700 to the present day. Many of the quilts are from the Victoria and Albert's collection, but a few have been loaned and commissioned by contempary artists, such as Natasha Kerr, especially for the show. There are five thematic displays to the exhibition, titled 'The Domestic Landscape', 'Private Thoughts, Political Debates', 'Virtue and Virtuosity', 'Making a Living' and 'Meeting the Past'. As I am now focusing on my final major project for my National Diploma in Art and Design, I shall be incorporating fine art and textiles to create a body of work inspired by many of the techniques I have seen throughout the exhibition, such as applique, embroidery, image transferring and recycling materials. I have also booked myself in for a two day conference in June at the V&A, which will be led by the curator of the exhibition, Sue Pritchard, and will explore the hidden histories and untold stories about quilts.
thats so cool, you are very lucky
